I work for a small museum with a large collection of WWI material. I am annotating a report by General Currie on the battle of Vimy Ridge where he adds a paragraph on the use of firing the Lewis from the hip with the sling. The purpose was to keep the German Machine Gunners' head down u till the bombers could flank them. By May I hope to have this report online - can I have your permission to use this picture to illustrate the point of firing the Lewis from the hip? Very damned good. Just one thing- the LEWIS gun would be IMPOSSIBLE to go Animal Mother (FMJ FTW). It was heavy, had a LOT of recoil... and was incredibly powerful.

holy shit nobody takes time to read the comments above. yes it was possible and on many an occasion used as such, people were able to shoot water cooled machine guns from the hip, that were similar power to this firearm look at audie murphy, guy was tiny.. didnt stop him

Wow... over reacting, much? Don't go fucking insane. And also, Audie Murphy had more of an incentive, as he wasn't alone. In fact, he was described as being loyal to his squad... this guy who you picture, he's fucking alone! The threat of your men dying is worse than that of you dying in some people. People have snapped enemy bones like twigs and flattened bodybuilders like they were nothing because they were angry. Stop fucking overreacting about me saying something. Christ.

wow so sensitive.. i wasnt upset, i was just amazed how many times that question has been asked on this same picture chill out. audie murphy was alone when he fired an mg42 from the hip, after his friend was shot by germans faking surrender, i think your referring to when he fired the mounted browning on the burning tank to cover his men perhaps

one of the most successful and tested for sure. chauchat was too delicate and B.A.R came too late, mg08/15 was just heavy i imagine

Have you read the book Forgotten voices of the Great war? If not I highly suggest you do, there's a particular account of a No. 2 of a lewis gunner team saying that his mate could sling and fire that thing from the hip and still hit fellows 50 feet away accurately, it just amazes me!

man i should check that out, i think guys in vietnam did that alot with the m60 as well, which was so heavy to slog they nicknamed it the pig. i heard some guy say it feels heavy at first but your body adjusts to it and im sure shooting from the hip feels almost natural after some time, plus you look like rambo just hopefully without the speech impediment

Hah, the Lewis is a very iconic machine gun.
I used to have a video of a man firing one standing up on youtube bookmarked, but can't seem too find it. Oh well.

I haven't seen anyone shoot a Lewis like that, but then again...desperate times call for desperate measures. When you're in the middle of a battle, hang the rules and do whatever the hell it takes to survive.

well i bet the lewis was easier to fire than the water cooled 30 cal, which john basilone used off the tripod on many an occasion. at least lewis had a stock, and wasnt filled with water lol

Well then, :stare:

Reminds of that Canadian Captain during the Battle of Hong Kong who's name I unfortunately forget, who did something similar.
